Overview of Amber Fort, Jaipur
In the beautiful “Pink City” on top of the Aravali Hills, lies the nostalgic, Amber Fort which is known to be one of the majestic palaces in India. Commonly known as Amer Fort, this palace is known for its extraordinary structures, and maze-like passage making it one of the finest masterpieces of the Indian history. Located nearly 11 kilometers away from the city of Jaipur, Amer Fort is garbed with yellow and pink sandstones which enhances the beauty of this magnificent palace. Known to be built in 1592 by the trusted generals of the ruler Akbar, Maharaja Man Singh I, Amer Fort was the main residence for the Rajput rulers.
Through its large earthwork and multiple gateways, the fort overlooks Maota Lake which is considered as one of the main sources of water for Amer Fort. It is even claimed that the fort is so vast that it would at least two to three hours to explore the entire fort in detail. Also, while exploring the fort, the visitors can avail the audio guides which explain the history associated with the fort. Further, visitors can also enjoy the elephant ride up to the stairs of the fort. And if stats to believed, the fort has more than five thousand visitors each day. Moreover, Amer Fort along with other Hill Forts of Rajasthan is included in the list of World Heritage Sites defined by UNESCO.

The popular light and sound show
For those visiting for the first time, this is something which one cannot miss out. The fifty-minute long sound and light show is held every evening, which displays the history of the Amer Fort and Jaipur. The motto behind this show is to celebrate the rich history, folklore, and traditions of Jaipur. However, as per rules, photography and video recording are restricted during the show.
Total cost for light and sound show is INR 295 per person.
Duration of the show is 52 minutes.

History of Amer Fort
If we look back in history, Amer city was a small town before it was ruled by Kachwahasand was built by a group of the small tribe named Meenas. The fort was originally named after the name of Lord Shiva, Ambikeshwar. However, there are many locals who believe that the name of the fort was derived from Amba, which is another name for the Goddess Durga. The Amer Fort was even named Dhundar when it was ruled by the Kachawahas from 11th century till 16th century before the Amer city was moved to Jaipur.
Back in the year of 1592 AD when Raja Man Singh built this splendid fort, which was later expanded and renovated by the successors. And as per the records, the older palace was named as KadimiMahalwhich is considered to be one of the oldest palaces of the country. Also, there is a small temple which was devoted to the patron goddess, Sheela Mata. And still, after the multiple modifications, the Amer Fort stand all the odds with ardor till now.
Architecture of Amer Fort
When it comes to the design of Amer Fort one can witness traditional Rajputana and Hindu style of architecture. Crafted aesthetically, the red sandstones and marbles give this fort an inexplicable and rustic look. The fort includes the elaborate paintings of the medieval hunting styles and portraits of the past Rajput rulers.
The fort is primarily divided into four main sections furnished with separate courtyard and entrance. The main entrance to the fort is named asSuraj Pol or Sun Gate which leads the visitors to the main courtyard. With the gate facing the east direction, the name of the entrance has its significance and respect for the rising sun. Further, the stunning stairways will lead visitors towards one of the most impressive courtyards named as JalebChowk, while the steps will lead one towards the Siladevi Temple. As per the records, there was a time when JalebChowkwas a place where the war bodies were displayed before the last proceedings and women were allowed to witness the same only through the windows.
Diwan-e-Aam or the public audience hall is the second level of Amer Fort. As per structures, it is a huge hall which opens on three sides. With massive mosaic glassworks, the hall stands on two pillars with mounted elephants. Further, the third courtyard of the fort is around the royal quarters which has an entrance through the Ganesh Pol. Apart from this, Sheesh Mahal is one of the beautiful attractions in the entire fort which is located on the left of the entrance gate with walls and ceilings comprising beautiful carvings of glass paintings and flowers. The Sheesh Mahal offers a stunning illusions as stated by many people.
Further, SukhMahal is another hall situated opposite to the Sheesh Mahal which is built with ivory and sandalwood. Another exciting feature of this SukhMahal includes the Magic Flower which is fresco carved from marble stone and Lord Ganesha. The south part of this hall comprises the oldest part of the complex and the fort used by Maharaja Man Singh I. The exit of the main entrance leads the visitors towards the city of Amer. Lastly, the final level of the fort was built for the Royal ladies, which has a courtyard surrounded with several rooms. The fort also consists of a hall named Jas Mandir which was used as a hall for the private audience back in time.

How to reach Amer Fort
As the fort is located about 11 kilometers away from the city of Jaipur, one can easily book a taxi or cab from the airport or the railway station to reach the fort. Further, there are various state buses from Jaipur and other major parts of Amer. Also, the public buses from Ajmeri Gate and MI Road might take around 20 minutes to reach Amer Fort.
