Cubbon Park is located in the capital city, Bengaluru of the state Karnataka and is spread across over an area of 300 acres. It is one of the most popular places for the people to spend some quality time with their friends and family. It is considered to be the green belt zone of Bengaluru, due to the natural beauty and greenery all over. People getting exhausted from work can come here and spend some peaceful and relaxing time alone or with their loved ones. It has a vibrant ecosystem that has more than 6000 trees. There are some other popular attractions such as Bengaluru Aquarium, Cubbon Park Museum, Seshadri Iyer Memorial Park, and Attara Kacheri are also be found in close vicinity.
When the Cubbon park came into existence, it had a land area of 100 acres but later, this area increased to 300 acres. At first, this park was known as “Meade’s Park” as it was established by John Meade in the year 1870. He was the acting commissioner of Mysore at that time. But later due to the improvement done by Cubbon Park with the help of the then Chief Engineer of the State, Major General Richard Sankey, this Park was known as the Cubbon Park.
However, the official name of this Park is “Sri. Chamarajendra Park” which was given in the year 1927 to commemorate the silver jubilee of the Maharaja Sri. Krishnaraja Wodeyar. Now, the administrative and management of the park comes under Department of Horticulture.

Major Attractions of Cubbon Park
In the midst of a popular and populous city which is known for its buzzing IT industry and tall skyscrapers, Cubbon Park is a peace zone that makes it lively through its natural beauty. The other places to visit near Cubbon Park are Central Public Library, Sir Vishweshwaraiah Industrial and Technological Museum, Government Museum, High Court of Karnataka, and Venkatappa Art Gallery. You can witness many statues and figures from the British era such as King Edward VII, Queen Victoria, Major General Sir Mark Cubbon along with some popular figures like Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar and Sir K. Sheshadri Iyer.
Other places of tourist attraction are Ringwood Circle, lotus pond, Dancing Fountain., and the bamboo grove nook. You can visit the second largest aquarium in India which is situated here and can see a wide range of fish and other marine species. For children , exciting ride on a toy train is available in the Jawahar Bal Bhawan.
Cubbon Park Aquarium
One of the most attractive point is, the Cubbon park Aquarium for which many tourists come here to have a glance at all those sea creatures that they might not have seen. This aquarium is popularly known as the Bengaluru Aquarium. This aquarium was established in 1983 inside an octagonal building having three different floors. The first floor contains 14 large water tanks, whereas the second floor contains 69 water tanks. The water species who are to be found in the aquarium are goldfish, catla, Siamese fighters, freshwater prawns, red tail shark, glow light tetra, angelfish, hockey stick tetra, Indian tiger barb, blue gourami, pearl gourami and many more. The visiting hours to the Bengaluru Aquarium are from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. It is closed on Monday and alternate Tuesday of every month.
Toy Train (Putani Express)
The Toy Train at Cubbon Park is another attraction for both adults and children. However, children will definitely drag you to this place if they know they are going to get a toy train ride. The Toy train-Putani Express is beautiful and attractive due to its bright color. Interesting thing is that this locomotive runs on bio-fuel. You will get a toy train in every 10 to 20 minutes and enjoy the flora and fauna of the little green forest along with other attractions.
Cubon Park Parking
There is ample parking space available in the park, in case you decide to take your own car. You can use the parking spot along the side of Bal Bhavan up to high court complex and on the Queens Roadside.
Architecture of Cubbon Park
You get a clean and well-managed path for both walking and for driving. Light motor vehicles are allowed on this way except from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM.
This park is one of the main green area present in the city. Many people flock here to spend some good time and breath fresh air. People who are interested in photography also find this place to be very attractive. This place houses some important architectures which are as follows:
Attara Kacheri: This structure was built in 1864 using only stones. It is an example of Gothic architecture. The influence of British era is evident in the structures and styles of this place.
Museum: The State Archeological Museum was built in the year 1876 by Colonel Sankey. It is the oldest museum built in India. The design and style are quite similar to that of Attara Kacheri in terms of structures and appearance. You can find some antique from the Mohenjodaro period, specimens of Vijayanagara and Halebid architecture, weaponries, ancient coins, stones inscriptions and much more.
Seshadri Iyer Memorial hall: This Hall was built in 1915 and is influenced by European architecture. It was dedicated to the then Dewan of Mysore, Seshadri Iyer. You will also come across a library housing 2.65 lakh books, which is considered the apex of the public library system in Karnataka. You can also find a Braille section here.
How to Reach Cubbon Park
Cubbon Park is easily accessible using both private and public transport. It is easy to get here from Kasturba Road, M.G. Road, Ambedkar Veedhi and Hudson Circle. The park is in close proximity to the State Central Library. KSRTC bus service is cheap and quite frequent. However, you can book Ola or Uber and can reach this place easily irrespective of your location. You can also use Bengaluru Metro service and can directly reach Cubbon Park Metro Station from where the Park is at a stone’s throw.
