Gorur dam or alternately known as the Hemavathi Dam is a popular picnic spot that attracts lots of tourists all around the country. This dam is constructed on the river Hemavathi which is one of the important tributaries of river Kaveri. This dam was built in 1979 and is located not so far from the city of Hassan. It is a multipurpose dam which is used for irrigation, drinking water and other household usages. The total catchment area of the Gorur Dam is 2,810 sq. km with a length and height of 4,692 m and 56.5 m respectively. It has a total of six spillway gates.

Legend of Gorur Dam
This place has some interesting mythological tales. According to the mythology, this place is holy because Lord Vishnu blessed the river Kaveri to be the garland of his adornment. As people say, the river kaveri is mightier than the river Ganga as Lord Vishnu blessed her so. The name of this dam is after a Kannada writer named Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar who was born in Goruru. He was also a freedom fighter, so the name of the dam was to honour his freedom struggle.

The Gorur dam is constructed on the Hemavathi river. Hemavathi is one of the important tributaries of river Kaveri. The Hemavathi is the main river that is the lifeline of Hassan district. The origin of the river is from the Western Ghats and it joins the Kaveri river at Krishnarajasagara after fathoming hundreds of kilometers. This dam was constructed in the year 1979 and the important purpose was to supply water mostly for domestic use and irrigation.

1. You are not allowed to take vehicle to the inner complex and have to walk about 1.5 km to reach the dam.
2. Carry your own food and water as you can’t find any shops near the dam.
3. You should get permission in order to climb the top of Gorur Dam.
How to Reach Gorur Dam
The Gorur dam is standing at a distance of 22km from the city of Hassan. You can reach the dam by public bus transport(KSRTC). If you reach Hassan by train and from the railway station, you can book a cab or any other private transport to reach the dam.
