Jantar Mantar, Delhi Overview
Jantar Mantar is one of the major tourist places in Delhi. Situated in the modern part of Delhi, Jantar Mantar was constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1724. Basically, it is an observatory, standing at an elevation of 220 meters. The major purpose behind the construction of Jantar Mantar was to anticipate the movements of other planets, moon, and sun. Jantar Mantar located in Delhi is not the only observatory designed by the popular architect Maharaja Jai Singh. In fact, there are a total of five such observatories built in different corners of the country i.e. Mathura, Jaipur, Varanasi, and Ujjain. Jantar Mantar was designed for astronomy purposes, but today it serves as one of the wonderful and historical tourist attractions.
The structure works with the help of 13 astronomy instruments. This monument built in the 17th century had all the instruments placed in such a manner that it enabled the astronauts to mark the positions of the sun, moon, and other planets without having to use additional space equipment. Maharaja Jai Singh II wanted to build a structure that could help the country predict the planet’s positions and other astronomy elements. His desire to study astronomy encouraged him to establish Jantar Mantar as per the guidance of Muhammad Shah. The monument features brick and rubble construction. Moreover, the 13 major instruments that are used for gathering the astronomical tables are restored once in a while without any critical modification in the monument.
Located on the eastern side of the monument is the temple of Bhairava, built and adorned by Maharaja Jai Singh II. Ram Yantra, Jai Prakash, Samrat yantra, and Misra Yantra are the four major instruments built here. Overall, this magnificent structure is worth a visit for all history buffs. If you are interested in studying astronomy and working of Jantar Mantra, schedule a visit to the site and capture the beauty of the monument.
