The Karapuzha Dam is situated in Wayanad in Kerala. It is
considered to be one of the biggest dams in India. Located near the Karapuzha
River, the water here is about 158 feet deep. The dam lies in the lap of nature
as there are hills and islands present nearby. The availability of water and
the presence of a beautiful environment make this place a favourite among
aquatic birds and nature loving tourists. The dam should preferably be visited
during the day due to low visibility during the evening. This place is perfect for
a fun getaway.
The construction ofKarapuzha Dam started in 1977 and completed
in 2004. The main reason behind building this dam was for the ease of irrigation.
The tourism department of Kerala took full advantage of this. An aquarium was
constructed, and various adventure sports like boating and canoeing for
entertainment purpose were started. The scenery looks very beautiful,
especially during monsoons. The Karapuzha Dam remains open round the year and
is a treat for nature lovers, bird watchers and photographers. A wide variety
of birds visit here.
