The Kaziranga National park is renowed for having more than half the number of the world’s One Horned Rhinoceros estimated to be (1855), Wild Water Buffalo (1666) and the famous Eastern Swamp Deer (468). There are also endangered mammalian species which number is estimated to be 15 out of the 35 total mammalian species. Some other animals found in the park are; the Royal Bengal Tiger, gaur, sambar, elephants, small Indian mongoose, large indian civet, sloth beer, golden jackal and wild boar. The Kaziranga park has a nickname given to it by locals and frequent tourists, it is often called “The Big Five Park” this name was derived due to the presence of the big five animals: the one horned rhino, the royal bengal tiger, the wild water buffalo, swamp deer and the Asian elephant.
In 2006, Kaziranga was declared a a tiger reserve and has the highest number of tigers in the world which is belived to be 1 tiger per Five square kilometers, the population of the wild cat in Kaziranga is belived to be 118. Kaziranga also has a flowing river and it is the abode of the endangered Ganges Dolphin.
When it comes to bird, Kaziranga park isn’t left out, it is is homebto several species of birds like; Assian openbill stork, white-billed pelican, black bellied tern, Baer’s Pochard duck, lesser white-fronted goose, lesser adjutant, greater adjutant, Dalmatian pelican, green shank, ferruginous duck, three species of vulture;Indian vulture, slender-billed vulture and the white-rumped vulture, white-bellied heron and so many more species.
Kaziranga National park is also a UNEScO World Heritage site and an Important Bird Area (IBA). Kaziranga has for different zones, this is for convenience and to aid management and also conservation. The four zones are: Western Range, Eastern Range, Kaziranga Range and the Burapahar Range. Only one safari of a particular zone is allowed to function at a time.

Kaziranga or Central Range – Mihimukh-Kathpora- Daphla ng-Diffolu River Bank- Mona beel- Karasing and back Bagori or Western Range -Dongabeel- Rouman- Rajapukhuri- Monabeel and back Agratoli or Eastern Range – Agratoli Sohola beel- Rongamotia- Maklung- Turturoni- Dhoba and back Burapahar Range – Ghurakati- Potahi beel- Diffolu- Phuloguri- Tunikati Whilst the Western zone can be said to be the best for elephant and safari and rhino sightseeing, the Eastern zone is considered to be the best for water birds.
For most tourists, the zenith of their tour is often the trip to the Kaziranga National Park because there are lots of activities outlined for tourists.
Tourists have the option to book a safari type jeep or an SUV to roam the park. Apart from Kaziranga being a protected environment, it is also a home for a good number of the world’s most endangered species which is a combination of mammals, animals, and various birds.
A good way to enjoy the park is to take a ride on an elephant, you can watch the endangered Bengal Tiger, bird watching, black bears, slot bear, Indian Leopard, wild Buffalo, Indian Rhino, Macaque, Indian Elephant, and many other animal’s you’ll come across. If you want to enjoy the lovely elephant ride, you’ll have to book early because they are almost always booked out.
The History of Kaziranga park can be said to be dated as far back to the 16th century. A tale told about saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva who blessed a couple called Kazi and Rangai and also instructed them to dig a pond in the now Kaziranga if they want their names to be known forever. Legends also told about a girl called Ranga who lives in a nearby village and loved a boy called Kazi from a village named Karbi Anglong. Their families didn’t approve of their relationship which made them to vanish into the forest that was later named Kaziranga.
Kaziranga is also said to be called ‘land of red deer’ as ‘kazi’ in Karbi refers to ‘goat’ and ‘Rangai’ refers to ‘red’. Historians have also come out to say that the name Kaziranga could also refer to ‘village of Kajir’ which is derived from the Karbi word ‘Kajir-a-rong’. In June 1, 1905, A place estimated to be 232 square kilometers was created as the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest. It was declared as a Reserve Forest in 1908. In 1916, the name was changed from Reserve Forest to Kaziranga game reserve. Sometime in 1950, a conservationist, P D Stacey, renamed it to Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary. Later in 1968, the Assam National Park act was passed by the Assam state government and Kaziranga was then declared a National Park. On the 11th of February 1974, its official status was accredited by the indian government and at about the same time, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Different Foods In Kaziranga National Park
There are varieties of local Assamese dish available and also some nice fish fish delicacies. Local dish such as; Laksa, Khar, Tenga and so much more are available. Although options of local foods are a little bit limited, the best places you can get good meals are hotels, lodges, resorts etc. Asides the limitation of local food, regular Indian foods are always available as resorts, hotels and lodges are readily available to cater for tourists.
How to Enjoy the National Park
Book a hotel before arrival so you don’t have to look for hotels with availability of rooms.
First Day- Either you fly in, drive or you use a bus. When you arrive, take a taxi to the hotel you already booked, it is advisable you rest the rest of the night. You can visit the restaurant at the hotel and enjoy a sumptuous local dish. When its early evening, book a safari ride if you haven’t already done that.
Second Day – when you wake up, do whatever morning routine you often do, then brace up for the activities agead. Take a cab to Kaziranga National Park Safari. A place where you will be marveled when you sight several endangered species of animals. Enjoy the elephant ride to take you anywhere in the park as opposed to the jeep and the SUVs. Next is lunch time, you can enjoy the varieties of food available at the range. After lunch, you can engage yourself with bird watching and spot several birds including migrating birds. If you used the SUV or Jeep and want to enjoy the elephant ride, this is the time tp do that. Take an elephant ride even if its for a very short time.
Third Day- Assam has always been famous for its wonderful teas, where you can buy some as souvenirs for family and friends. You can visit some of the most famous tea plantations close to Kaziranga and experience one of the best tea experience of a lifetime. Don’t forget to participate in some tea tasting that offers a large varieties of teas. Tea varieties can come in several colors, fragrance, taste and sometimes, after taste. Now you have a very memorable experience.
