Situated on the banks of Kavanar river, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is spread across an area of 14 acres and is managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. This sanctuary was built in a rubber plantation and taken care by Englishman named baker’s estate in the earlier days. You can also view these exquisite birds from neighbouring areas such as PoothanpandiKayal and Pathirmanal. Birds like owls, cuckoos, waterfowls and herons truly love this place as it provides them with a home. Even the migratory birds such as the Siberian Crane come to live here. Some birds are spotted here specifically in their migratory seasons. These birds travel from places such as the Himalayas and the Siberia.

A 2 km walk takes the tourists towards the end of the trail.You will also have to walk back because there is no exit gate. This trail starts at the ticket office, which is situated near the entrance. Along the way to the trail, you will come across The Butterfly Garden indicted by a board which preserves many butterflies.

There will be gorgeous white and blackbirds at the watchtower waiting to look at you. The watchtower comprises of several nests, and you will find birds flying all around you. Best Time To Visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
November to February is precisely the most convenient time to visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Around this time, you will find birds migrating from all across the world. If you’re willing to look for local birds, it is highly recommended to visit the sanctuary from June to August.

The Kottayam railway station is 13 km awayfrom the bird sanctuary. If you’re travelling by airplane, you’ll have to get down at Cochin International Airport and then travel for 94 kilometers through road to reach the sanctuary. Taxies are available from both railway station as well as the airport.
