Nagarhole Tourism
Situated in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka, Nagarhole has diverse forms of flora and fauna. It is well-known for wildlife parks and bird sanctuaries namely, Nagarhole National Park and Bandipur Bird Sanctuary, respectively.
The word Nagarhole is a combination of two Kannada words viz. “nagar” meaning snake and “hole” meaning streams. Located along the Western Ghats, the name Nagarhole is apt for this place as multiple streams snake their way through its tropical forest. It is one of the best places for ecotourism and here, you get an opportunity to explore natural beauty and wildlife in the greatest depth. Various rare and exotic species of birds and animals such as Asiatic elephants and Indian Bison inhabit the national park. Along with the greenery and animals around, you will also be mesmerized by the beautiful waterfalls cascading down the hillocks and the sound of the flowing streams will make you forget all your worries. The place also has a rich cultural history and you can visit various temples to seek spiritual peace.
What to do in Nagarhole?
There is a lot to do in Nagarhole ranging from exploring the wildlife to visiting local restaurants and trying out the scrumptious local delicacies. Also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, the Nagarhole National Park provides you with an opportunity to explore the intricacies of its wildlife and forest. There are around 250 species of birds in the sanctuary and if you are lucky, you will able to spot the most amazing and beautiful species. Plan out a trek in the dense jungles of Brahmagiri Mountains and go for a safari and get thrilled by the sight of Asiatic elephants and Indian Bison. You really do not have to be a wildlife enthusiast to enjoy the divinity of nature and wildlife around Nagarhole.
A trip to Nagarhole is incomplete without trying out the famous local cuisines prepared from Coorgi crops. Moreover, you will not feel left out if you have an appetite for mainstream Karnataka cuisines. There are several affordable restaurants that offer dishes such as Akki Roti, Dosa, Vada, Sambhar, Kesari Bath, and many more. If you like sweets, don’t forget to try the famous Mysore Pak.
Travel Itinerary for Nagarhole Trip
Day 1- A homestay or a guesthouse will be arranged prior to your arrival in Nagarhole National Park. You need to check-in by 6 p.m. Relax, freshen up and after dinner, you can enjoy the campfire. Rest for the night and get a good sleep because you will have an early morning the next day.
Day 2- Wake up early and get ready for a thrilling experience at the Nagarhole National Park. The safari timing is usually from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. However, you can opt for evening safari which starts at 3:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. The cost of safari per person is INR 300. As a part of the safari, you will be able to witness various wild animals and birds.
Later you can head off to Valmeekam Clay Art Gallery which is located at an hour distance from Nagarhole. Here, you will be fascinated by the rock carvings and various forms of clay art that are reminiscent of the past and depict the tribal history.
Day 3- Get ready with a good pair of trekking shoes because this day will involve a lot of walking. You can trek to the Brahmagiri Mountains located near Nagarhole and explore the rich flora and fauna of the forest. Next, you can make your day interesting and adventurous by visiting places around Nagarhole locales such as Irrpu falls, Ishwara Temple, Kutta, and nearby reserves.
