National Zoological Park, Delhi Overview
For nature lovers National Zoological Park is one of the best tourist places in Delhi. Spread over 176 acres, the National Zoological Park in New Delhi boasts of a wonderful collection of endangered birds and rare animals. Also known as Chidiya Ghar, the zoo houses 1350 animals. Visitors can explore the zoo either on foot or rent a vehicle that will give a quick tour around the area. National Zoological Park got established in 1959 and is situated close to the Old Fort. Tourists (especially families and children) love to spend their free time walking around Chidiya Ghar and exploring over 130 species of birds and animals from all over the world.
Tourists are not allowed to bring food in the park, though there is a canteen that serves delicious food. The park has many battery-operated vehicles. Earlier, the park was famous with the name ‘Delhi Zoo’. Later on, it was renamed to the National Zoological Park. The site has everything from the tiniest bird to the wildest lion. It is super fun to be around the cute little birds and endangered animals that are hardly spotted in the country.
Animals get to live in an environment that looks almost similar to their natural habitat. If you take the right path from the entrance gate, you will get to spot African Wild Buffalo, Giraffes, Zebras, Hippopotamus, Spider Monkey, Chimpanzee, and Gir Lion. Visitors who take the left will see jaguars, macaques, peafowl, and hyenas. Other animals present here are Asiatic Lion, Swamp Deer, Royal Bengal Tiger, Rhinoceros, Brow Antlered Deer, and more. Right in the center, you will find an underground reptile section that houses a wide variety of snakes and lizards.
