Rajghat, Delhi Overview
Located at a distance of 4 kilometers from Janpath, Rajghat is known for its historical significance and among list of places to visit in Delhi. It is the place, where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated a day after he was shot. The Father of the Nation was cremated in Rajghat in 1948, a year after independence. Placed right in the middle of the lush greenery is a plain black marble structure, which honors Mahatma Gandhi and all his deeds. Rajghat receives many tourists. Both local and international tourists visit the place to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Built by Vanu G. Bhuta, Mahatma’s memorial or cremation spot is designed in such a manner that it reflects simplicity. The International VIPs pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by placing fresh flowers on the cremation spot.
While Rajghat holds the cremation spot of the great leader Mahatma Gandhi, you could also find the Samadhis of other popular leaders in the nearby area. Located on the northern side of the Rajghat is Jawaharlal Nehru’s cremation spot. The area is popularly known as Shanti Vana. Other popular leaders cremated near Rajghat are Jagjivan Ram, Rajiv Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Chandra Shekhar, Shankar Dayal Sharma, Devi Lal, I.K. Gujral, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Chaudhary Charan Singh.
Rajghat looks fascinating with a lush green garden adorned with fresh trees. Tourists from all over the world pay a visit to Rajghat to honor the cremation spots of the great Indian leaders and warriors. Rajghat also houses the Gandhi Memorial Museum, in which, the pictures of that era and sculptures are displayed. Tourists get a golden opportunity to get an insight into the Sarvodaya Movement that is shown through a brief film every Thursday. You can schedule a visit to Rajghat on Friday to participate in the prayers. The site is open from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM for visitors.
