St. John in the Wilderness Church, Dharamshala Overview
Built in the year of 1852, St. John in the Wilderness Church falls amongst the preferred churches located in Himachal Pradesh. This neo-gothic church was constructed to honor the Baptist – John. This church is located on the way to McLeod Ganj, near Dharamshala. The Belgian stained glass windows are the most attractive thing in the church. The lush greenery, dense forest, and quietness of nature surrounding this church create a gothic atmosphere.
The church has the name St. John in the Wilderness because it is made of dense woods. St John Church is Lord Ergin’s last relaxing place, who was the viceroy of India during the British Raj and also the governor-general. It is also one of the oldest architectural buildings in Dharamshala. People often confuse this church with the same-named church situated in Nainital, Uttarakhand.
