Surinsar Lake
Twin to the Mansar Lake, the Surinsar Lake is said to have gotten its roots from the Hindu mythology of Mahabharata. When Arjuna shot an arrow into Mansar, it sprung lakes out of the earth, one of which is Surinsar.
19 kms from the city of Jammu, Surinsar has become a favourable picnic spot over the years. The peaceful setting of the lake makes for an ideal getaway from the bustle of the city. At the lake, you can enjoy the tranquil waters as well as the serenity of the densely surrounded mountain ranges in the backdrop. All in all, it is a picturesque view to behold.
The 30km stretch between the Surinsar and the Mansar lakes is covered by the Surinsar Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary. You can explore 15 avifauna species and 3 mammalian species at this sanctuary. The lakes, moreover, are lined by mangroves and pine trees.
At the centre of the Surinsar lake is a tiny island, inhabited by bats. Summers are a treat at the lake with the water surface covered with lotuses. Boating and swimming are prohibited to preserve the beauty of the lake.
