The Buddhist Caves
There are 12 Buddhist Caves situated in the Ellora Caves complex. Also known as viharas or monasteries, these caves are adorned with beautiful paintings and sculptures of Lord Buddha and Bodhisattva Saints. Amongst the 12 caves, Chaitya Hall, which is the 10th cave in serial order, is the most beautiful cave that houses a 15 feet tall statue of Buddha. Also popularly known as ‘Carpenter’s Cave’, Chaitya Hall constitutes a canopied verandah that houses two shrines and a monk cell. It is a cathedral-like stupa where 3.3 m tall statue of Buddha is installed in the Vyakhyana Mudra.
