The Umananda Island in Guwahati: An Overview
The Umananda Island happens to be the smallest river island in the whole world, and is a place great myths and legends, a refuge where man and nature coexist as one in the peace and harmony of the island.
You will find that the beautiful island is located in the middle of the great Brahmaputra River. The river also happens to traverse the quaint city of Guwahati. The tales have it that it was the place where lord Kamde, the god of Love, was burnt to ashes by the third eye of Lord Shiva, when the god of love tried interrupting his meditation, thereby giving its alternative name “Bhasmchal”. One of the major attractions of the Umananda Island is the Umananda Devi temple which is dedicated in reverence of the lord shiva, and witnesses a large flux of tourists and devotees alike whenever there are religious festivals.
When exactly to visit the famous Umananda Island
Try visiting the mystic Umananda island in the relatively colder months of October through May. The weather during the winter season is perfect with just a need for an extra layer of thick woolen clothes for warmth especially at night time. After February, the temperatures can rise slightly although still comfortable and not so unbearable for a visit.
The island can become inaccessible during monsoons. This is because heavy rain can bring flash floods and the water level on the island rises significantly. Therefore, tourists are advised not to plan their trips to this place during monsoons.
