Main Info
It is a highly popular fresh water lake, 7 km towards the south from Kovalam in Trivandrum, Kerala. In the regional language Malayalam, the lake is called VelliyaniKayal. It expands over 7.5 acres, and is an important source for drinking and irrigation. The lake is located within the premises of the Vellayani Agricultural University that deserves a visit.
Lotuses blooming in the lake waters and the cool breeze make the evenings an ideal time for a walk by the lake. You are likely to turn nostalgic, once you experience what life is like at the VellayaniKayal village, away from the noise of the cities.
The coconut groves that surround the lake and the backwaters make the lake quite scenic. No wonder, apart from the locals, tourists also come here picnicking. There is a lot of hustle and bustle around the lake during the tradition festive season of Onam. The festivities also observe a traditional boat race. A huge crowd gathers to watch the race.
The lake’s ecosystem supports a large variety of flora and fauna. The lake’s origin is wrapped in the mysteries of mythology. As a famous legend goes, there was a thirsty beggar. He visited a meditating saint. The saint understood well that his bowl was usually empty. He chanted a brief prayer and poured down the few little drops it had. And the little drops were converted into a huge lake! The lake came to be known as Vellayani Lake. Though the lake is outstandingly beautiful and fresh even today, various officials have been trying to drain it for the sake of agriculture. But it has been objected to by the locals, and also the environmentalists.
